The Capability To Experiment

The past decade of marijuana research has been hindered greatly by the US federal government's unwillingness to allow for ample research to be conducted on the drug, and its potential medicinal benefits. While some research has been conducted in the US, companies trying to get approved to research medical marijuana can only be approved to do so by the DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency) and NIDA (National Institute on Drug Abuse). However, there has been some conclusive research conducted on the medicinal benefits of marijuana that has been able to meet these federal requirements in order to conduct extensive research into the subject matter in order to identify the medical applications of marijuana.

There have been numerous important findings that have been discovered through ongoing medical marijuana research efforts. Such findings purport the medicinal benefits of prescribing marijuana to patients. It's because of this research that many states in the union have approved the legal usage of medical marijuana for patients.

  • A Journal Neurology study found that "Smoked cannabis reduced pain in HIV patients." 50 patients were studied using cannabis and placebo. The study concluded that 52% of patients who smoke cannabis experienced a 30% reduction in the intensity of pain. In a similar Neuropsychopharmacology study, it was concluded that there was a 46% ratio of pain relief.
  • According to the Journal of Pain, 38 patients suffering from spinal cord injuries smoked marijuana using different levels of doses. The results concluded that all 32 of the patients who completed the study experienced relief from chronic neuropathic pain.
  • An Anesthesiology study concluded that smoking marijuana reduces the reception of pain in the body. 15 subjects were administered low to high doses of marijuana to see if it could reduce pain experienced from an injection of capsaicin (the chemical that makes chili peppers "hot"). The study concluded that marijuana reduces pain reception and the higher the level of the dosage, the greater the pain relief experienced.
  • Using marijuana through a vaporizer is safe, according to a recent Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeuticsstudy. 14 subjects were administered marijuana either in smoked form or using vaporizers. In all instances the vaporizers were deemed safe and free from any harmful carcinogens, and the patients preferred vaporizers to smoking.
  • A study is currently underway to find out if marijuana can provide spastic relief for patients who are suffering from multiple sclerosis. The placebo being used is cigarettes. The study has not been published yet.
  • Two new studies are in progress currently, with results that should be announced at the end of 2011.
  • Currently, the only state in the union conducting extensive marijuana research is California.
